Over the years and four editions, Vertebral Manipulation has evolved to become a standard work on spinal manipulative techniques. The Maitland approach has become accepted throughout the world and the book acknowledged as the indispensible guide to techniques. During this period, advances both in treatment and in our understanding of locomotor disorders have been considerable, and the book has changed steadily to accommodate them. At the same time the author’s ideas about presentation have developed as a result of long teaching experience and informed criticisms from other users. In the light of all these changes, it was felt the time had come for a radical revision of both content and presentation. The fifth edition is therefore a marked departure from previous editions.
